Story by Chris Beaudin / March 26, 2026

Two BEHKO teams hit the links for the Charleston Leaders Annual Golf Tournament. And while we didn’t bring home the trophy this year, we walked away with something far more valuable: the satisfaction of supporting an organization making a real difference in our community.
Charleston Leaders runs the Leader Academy, a year-long leadership development program for high school sophomores right here in the Lowcountry. Through monthly sessions, mentorships, internships, and hands-on leadership training, these students gain the tools and connections they need to become the next generation of community leaders. It’s the kind of program that doesn’t just benefit individual students—it strengthens the entire region.
We were proud to sponsor a hole and field two teams for the tournament. Sure, we had some great drives out there, but honestly, the best part was getting away from the office and having real conversations with our team and other supporters who care about this cause as much as we do.
Safety First—Even on the Golf Course
In true construction fashion, we had a reminder that safety matters everywhere. Our Senior Superintendent, Al Wischusen, found himself in the path of an errant shot from a fellow golfer. Fortunately, Al walked away just fine… the only casualty was the pride of the golfer who sent the ball his way.
Lesson learned: we might need to bring our hard hats next year!
Weather? What Weather?
March in Charleston is usually mild, but Mother Nature had other plans. It was cold, like really cold for this time of year. But when the cause is this important, a little chilly weather isn’t going to keep us off the course. Plus, who doesn’t want an excuse to get outside and play for a good reason?
Why We Show Up
At BEHKO, we’re builders. We build facilities, we build partnerships, and we believe in building up our community. Charleston Leaders is doing critical work developing young leaders who will shape the future of the Lowcountry, and that’s something we’re proud to support.
We didn’t win the tournament—but the real win is knowing these students are getting the opportunities they deserve. And that’s a victory worth celebrating.
