Charleston, SC – BEHKO is pleased to announce the addition of Christian Carter, PE, to our Charleston team as Structural Engineer & Project Manager. Christian brings extensive experience in structural design and a proven track record of delivering complex, high-profile projects across multiple market sectors.
Christian graduated from The University of Alabama in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a minor in Structural Engineering. Since then, he has built a distinguished career designing concrete, steel, wood, and cold-form structures for healthcare, education, multifamily, mixed-use, and commercial markets.
His experience is particularly notable in high seismic and hurricane-prone regions, where he has successfully navigated the unique challenges these environments present. Christian has served as the primary designer on a diverse portfolio of projects, including waterfront steel-framed restaurants, 7-story post-tension concrete dormitories for the University of South Carolina, and a 3-story Risk Category IV hospital facility.
What sets Christian apart is his comprehensive understanding of full-cycle structural design and his ability to coordinate seamlessly across multidisciplinary teams. Throughout his career, he has worked closely with architectural, MEP, and civil teams to develop efficient, constructible structural systems that meet complex site and regulatory constraints.
Christian’s technical toolkit is extensive. He is proficient in industry-standard software including RISA 3D, Revit, RAM Structural Systems, AutoCAD, and numerous specialized analysis programs. This proficiency enables him to tackle challenging design problems with precision and deliver high-quality, code-compliant solutions.
His expertise spans a wide range of structural systems, from wood-over-concrete podiums and steel moment frames to reinforced masonry, cold-formed steel, and environmental concrete. He has also developed valuable experience in evaluating and retrofitting existing buildings using ASCE 41 and IEBC standards, providing cost-effective solutions for alterations and additions.
Prior to joining BEHKO, Christian most recently served as a Structural Engineer at ADC Engineering in Charleston, where he designed structures for healthcare, education, multifamily, and commercial buildings. Before that, he spent two years at Davis & Floyd, also in Charleston, where he honed his skills in Revit-based design with full architectural and MEP coordination.
Christian’s career began at BC Architects Engineers in Falls Church, Virginia, where he progressed from Structural Engineer to Structural Team Lead. In this leadership role, he managed project workload and schedules, supervised team operations, trained new staff, and continuously refined department standards and workflows. This experience developed his strong project management capabilities and his commitment to technical quality.
Christian is known for his strong technical judgment, meticulous attention to detail, and solution-oriented approach to problem-solving. He understands that successful structural engineering requires not just technical excellence, but also the ability to balance competing demands—creating designs that are safe, efficient, constructible, and cost-effective.
His experience with site investigations, construction observations, submittal reviews, and RFI responses gives him a holistic understanding of the design-to-construction process. This perspective is invaluable in delivering projects that perform well not just on paper, but in the field.
