Charleston, SC – BEHKO Construction is proud to announce the successful completion of a comprehensive design-build renovation of the Roy Barth Tennis Center at Kiawah Island Golf Resort. The project represents a significant enhancement to one of the nation’s premier tennis destinations, delivering a modernized facility that elevates the guest experience while honoring the clubhouse’s established character.

As the design-build partner for this transformative project, BEHKO managed the complete scope of work—from initial architectural design and engineering through permitting, construction, and final delivery. The integrated approach enabled seamless coordination across all project phases, ensuring quality craftsmanship and efficient execution despite the complexities of renovating an active, guest-facing facility.

“The renovation of the Roy Barth Tennis Center has greatly enhanced the experience we can offer our resort guests,” said Melissa Hammond, Director of Resort Renovation and Design at Kiawah Island Golf Resort. “Choosing BEHKO as our design-build partner for the project ensured seamless execution and quality craftsmanship due to their integrated approach—managing everything from architectural design and engineering to permitting and construction. They kept operations running throughout construction and delivered a facility that exceeds our standards. BEHKO didn’t just complete a project; they proved themselves as a trusted partner who understands the unique demands of resort renovation and hospitality design.”

The renovation encompassed both interior and exterior improvements to the clubhouse, including the addition of a new classroom and fitness room to support expanded instructional programming. A new kitchen and bar enhance the facility’s hospitality offerings, while expanded deck areas provide additional outdoor amenity space for guests. Throughout the facility, restrooms were upgraded, the pro-shop was refreshed, and a new storage facility was added to support daily operations.

One of the project’s primary challenges involved maintaining uninterrupted tennis center operations while executing major construction work. BEHKO’s team developed a carefully phased construction sequence that allowed the facility to remain open and functional throughout the renovation period, minimizing disruption to resort guests and programming schedules.

The completed Roy Barth Tennis Center now offers a more functional, modern, and guest-focused environment that positions Kiawah Island Golf Resort to deliver exceptional tennis experiences for decades to come. The facility’s enhanced instructional spaces, upgraded amenities, and refined aesthetic create an environment that meets the high standards expected by resort guests while supporting the center’s role as a nationally recognized tennis destination.

This project exemplifies BEHKO’s expertise in hospitality and resort construction, where maintaining operational continuity while delivering transformative improvements requires specialized knowledge, meticulous planning, and close collaboration with resort leadership. The successful completion of the Roy Barth Tennis Center renovation reinforces BEHKO’s position as a trusted partner for complex hospitality projects throughout the Lowcountry and beyond.
